“The Secret” has spread like kudzu. It’s everywhere–even though, in the end, it always disappoints. One New Age group recently sent me an e-mail about why “The Secret” doesn’t work–and offering the secret to “The Secret” that would make all the difference. For a fancy fee, of course.

One secret about why “The Secret” doesn’t work is that it’s really an attempt to be your own god. YOU manifest your will. YOU bring the universe to you. YOU’RE in control. Well, no. God, the real God, is in control. How do I know for sure? Because if I were God, I’d be taller and thinner. Now, that’s control.
